Carola Dunn: My Lord Winter

Lady Jane Brooke sought shelter when her coach broke down, and found herself at the Earl of Wintringham’s estate. Trying to conceal her identity, she introduced herself as a governess. Lord Winter, as the apparently cold earl was called, thawed in response to the delightful Miss Brooke, but she knew he would never approve of her deception.

She has 99 problems and her life is one.  Another is her mother who doesn’t really want to have a daughter old enough to be out, another is an absentee father, and the final straw is a rickety old carriage that breaks down.

Before she can get to London.

Its a comedy of errors, clean and straightforward.  Don’t expect twists and turns…they aren’t here.  Instead, Dunn offers a deliciously familiar Sunday roast fare of grumpy H and independently precocious H who inevitably, oh-so-unsmoothly, fall in love.

Okay, so there is a bit of the beating-of-deceased-horse variety misunderstanding/lie plot hinge that gets a bit musty and fusty.  Yes, its formulaic.  But c’mon, who doesn’t love a Darcy and Elizabeth rehash?!

This was a first Dunn for me at the urging of a fellow Reg Reader, and I found her writing to be easy to read, with a thorough understanding of the genre, history, and character development.  I tend to prefer more witty repartee, but there is an Austen esque quality to Dunn’s favoring of description with some Reg readers will love.

The romance is sweet, the writing great, and if a little tried and true, its all the more comfortable for a cozy, quick read.  I greatly look forward to more Dunn in my future!
