Regency Science and Invention: A Patent for Moveable Axles for Four-Wheeled Carriages

A delightful “article” in the March 1, 1819 edition of the Repository of Arts, Literature and Fashion details the new patent for moveable axles for four-wheeled carriages by Ackermann.

Indeed, though intended to be short, the pamphlet excerpt continues on for 10 pages, clearly too much to paste here…but an interesting piece of what I can only guess to be a form of early info-mercial. I particularly like the appeal to the “higher and wealthier classes of the community” who make up the Repository readership.

Purely delightful if you have a little time to peruse:

One Response to Regency Science and Invention: A Patent for Moveable Axles for Four-Wheeled Carriages

  1. Having seen some of these historical carriages up close, I can imagine that any sort of journey of length would be very uncomfortable. The moveable axles must have been seen as a godsend for those who had to face the long and very tiring journey to and from the country to London.
