This was not something people weren’t aware of or talking about in the Regency era (or thereabouts).  I stumbled upon this blurb in the November 1818 issue of La Belle Assemblee, and thought I would share as it sheds light on women, in desperate need of pockets, even then…and a defense of pockets:
