Regency Advertisements: Troublesome Freckles and Facial Hair

The ad appeared in the April 1817 issue of Ackermann’s Repository.  According to Plucked: A History of Hair Removal (Herzig, 2015) in the early 19th century dozens of small manufacturers began to create and market special blends of hair removing powders or unguents.  The most popular were Trent’s Depilatory, Hubert’s Roseate Powder, Colley’s Depilatory and Dr. Gouraud’s Poudres Subtile.  Colley’s was reportedly made of a mixture of quicklime and potassium sulfate (Herzig, 2015).
