An Encyclopædia of Cottage, Farm, and Villa Architecture and Furniture (1835)

Fire screens could be decorated with embroidery, fabric, painting or other needlework and usually made of wood.  Before efficient and/or central heating, they would be commonly used in most rooms that had a fire for heat to provide a shield from occupants and the heat and glare.
